Elegant Italian Murano glass handkerchief-style vase, dating to the mid-20th century, circa the 1960's, distinguished by its sculptural undulating rim and sophisticated clear-and-white decorative treatment. The vase is formed in hand-blown clear glass with a dramatically ruffled, folded upper edge, creating the flowing silhouette associated with classic Murano “fazzoletto,” or handkerchief, forms. Encircling the body are rhythmic opaque white horizontal bands that follow the curves of the vessel and emphasize its fluid shape. The transparent ground gives the vase a light, luminous quality, while the white decoration introduces a graphic modernist contrast. The broad, irregular mouth and deeply folded sides make the piece especially sculptural when viewed from above or in profile.
