Impressive Italian carved marble bust of Aristotle, dating to the 20th century and conceived in the tradition of the great classical portrait sculptures of antiquity. The philosopher is depicted with a finely carved white marble head and neck, characterized by tightly curled hair, a full articulated beard, deeply modeled facial features, and a contemplative expression. The classical treatment of the face contrasts dramatically with the richly colored marble torso below. The bust is dressed in a Roman-style draped garment carved from a striking red and white veined marble, its natural movement and coloration used effectively to emphasize the folds of the fabric. The chest is further embellished with sculptural classical ornament, including theatrical-mask motifs, lending the composition an especially architectural and decorative quality.
