About

Danish modern sculptural teak lounge chair Model FD-136 by Finn Juhl for France and Son, Denmark, 1950s. Designed by Finn Juhl, this iconic lounge chair embodies the sculptural approach that forever changed Danish furniture design. Trained as an architect rather than a cabinetmaker, Juhl viewed furniture as functional sculpture, creating organic forms that appear to float within their frames. The FD-136 perfectly captures that philosophy with its floating armrests, suspended backrest, and gently curved seat, giving the chair a remarkable sense of lightness from every angle. Expertly crafted from solid teak, the frame showcases the exceptional woodworking that made Danish modern furniture world-renowned. Every joint flows seamlessly into the next, while the sculpted arms taper gracefully into the front legs, demonstrating the level of hand craftsmanship associated with the finest Scandinavian furniture of the era. Newly refinished, the teak reveals its warm golden tone and beautiful natural grain, complemented by new Italian black leather upholstery that highlights the chair's elegant silhouette while providing exceptional comfort. Produced by France and Son, one of Denmark's most influential furniture manufacturers, the chair bears its original manufacturer's medallion, confirming its authenticity. During the 1950s and 1960s, France & Son helped introduce Danish modern design to an international audience through collaborations with many of the country's most iconic designers, including Finn Juhl. The FD-136 remains one of Finn Juhl's most recognizable lounge chair designs, admired for its innovative construction, sculptural presence, and effortless balance between artistry and comfort. More than sixty years after its introduction, it continues to stand as one of the defining achievements of Danish modern design.
