A finely rendered late-19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicting Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, Bishop of Myra. Presented frontally in traditional episcopal vestments and a jeweled mitre, the saint raises his right hand in blessing while holding an ornamented Gospel book in his left. Abbreviated Church Slavonic inscriptions flank the radiant halo. The figure is painted on a prepared wooden panel against a luminous gilded ground, intricately tooled with scrolling foliate and geometric motifs. A richly colored border in red, turquoise, blue, and rose painted decoration. The icon is presented in a complementary molded giltwood frame. An impressive devotional object combining spiritual significance with the elaborate surface decoration characteristic of Russian ecclesiastical art. Overall
