An antique Japanese hanging wall scroll that features a Thunder God awkwardly stuck on a torii gate while an onlooking man hides behind his umbrella. Artist: Hanabusa Icho (1652-1724) Hanabusa Icho was born the son of a doctor, Taga Hakuan, and went on to study in Edo under Kano Yasunobu (1614-1685), however it is said that Hanabusa was later excommunicated. Hanabusa also studied haiku and gained popularity but was exiled to Izu (modern day Aichi Prefecture) because of a scandal. 11 years later he was forgiven and allowed to come back to Edo where he estalished a new style of genre painting. [Note] While this is a real antique painting atributed to a specific artist, there is a long history of "Utsushi" artists copying others works down to the signature. All works sold by Shibui are, to the best of our knowledge, what they claim to be. Ink on Paper | Silk Brocade Border Edo
