Sakiori 裂織 blanket. Sakiori, to tear and weave, is a traditional form of textile recycling. When cloth is beyond almost any other use it can be torn into strips and re-woven into s akiori panels. This piece was made to surround a sunken hearth upon which a kotatsu table would have been placed. Another Kotatsu covering blanket would then trap the heat while friends and family could sit around the table to keep warm. Recycled Fabric Cotton & Silk Early 20th Century 64" x 71" (length, width)
