About

An exceptional and rare vintage Fürstenberg biscuit porcelain chess set, dating circa 1947 and presented on a polished marble chessboard. This heirloom-quality set is distinguished by its finely detailed figural castings in mint green and white glazed parian porcelain, representing historical and allegorical figures with remarkable craftsmanship. The king is modeled after Duke Karl I of Brunswick, with the queen depicting his consort, Philippine Charlotte. Bishops represent Johann George von Langen, while the knights are rendered as expressive horse heads. The rooks take the form of castles with conical spires, and the pawns are charmingly modeled as young peasants carrying flails. Each piece exhibits refined facial features and crisp detailing, characteristic of Fürstenberg’s high firing standards. All pieces are marked to the base with the Fürstenberg stylized uppercase “F” in dark blue glaze, confirming authenticity. The set is paired with a 14-inch marble board featuring contrasting black and veined white squares, offering an elegant and substantial playing surface. The German Fürstenberg Porcelain Factory was founded by Charles I, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel in 1747. The original eighteenth century moulds were re-used by the factory in 1947 to commemorated its bi-centenary. A rare and highly collectible set, combining historical subject matter with superior German porcelain artistry—ideal for collectors and connoisseurs alike.
