About

An exceptional and unusually large Ottoman Levantine bridal or dowry chest, dating to circa 1850 or earlier and attributed to Syria or Lebanon. Constructed of richly patinated wood, this remarkable chest is hand decorated with an extraordinarily dense arrangement of individually cut mother-of-pearl inlay. The broad façade is organized around a magnificent circular medallion filled with interlaced Islamic arabesque geometry and centered by a luminous mother-of-pearl rosette. Mirrored flowering branches, leafy vines, blossoms and stylized botanical forms extend across the front in a beautifully balanced composition. Multiple borders of running foliage, chevron stringing and geometric inlay frame the central decoration, creating exceptional visual depth against the warm reddish-brown wood. The ornament continues across the upper edge, tall supports and substantial triangular corner brackets. This fully integrated decoration gives the piece an architectural quality and distinguishes it from more commonly encountered low blanket chests. A central keyhole remains visible within the upper foliate border. The hinged lid lifts from the front edge to reveal a generous storage compartment originally intended for textiles, clothing, linens and valued household possessions. The upper storage case measures approximately 57 inches wide × 19 inches high × 21 inches deep. Throughout the Ottoman Levant, elaborately decorated bridal or trousseau chests were traditionally commissioned to hold the garments, textiles and household treasures assembled for a marriage. In addition to their practical purpose, the quality and abundance of the inlay reflected the family’s status and appreciation for accomplished craftsmanship. With its substantial scale, luminous shell decoration and beautifully aged surface, this chest has tremendous decorative presence. It could serve as a statement storage piece in an entry hall, living room, library or principal bedroom, equally successful within a Mediterranean, Spanish Colonial, Moorish, Islamic, eclectic or restrained contemporary interior. The chest retains a deep antique patina with expected surface
