About

Large-Scale Islamic Astrolabe with Five Rolling Celestial Globes India or Persia, Early 20th Century Reproduction after Medieval Islamic Originals An impressive early 20th-century Islamic metalwork astrolabe, conceived as a faithful reproduction of medieval astronomical instruments developed during the Islamic Golden Age. Cast in bronze and brass, this large-scale example features a rare and visually compelling five–rolling celestial globe mechanism, evoking the sophisticated scientific devices of the Middle Ages. Astrolabes—originating in the Hellenistic world and perfected by Islamic astronomers—functioned as hand-held representations of the cosmos, used for astronomy, timekeeping, navigation, and astrological calculation. This reproduction reflects those historic purposes while emphasizing ornamental craftsmanship and scholarly homage rather than strict scientific utility. The surface is finely hand-engraved with celestial maps, graduated measurement scales, geometric ornament, and bilingual inscriptions: one side bearing Hindu script and decorative motifs, the other engraved with Arabic-Persian calligraphy, astrological symbols, and star indicators. Such dual inscriptions underscore the cultural and scientific exchange between Islamic and Indian traditions, particularly in historic Indian Ocean trading centers. Substantial in scale and weight, the astrolabe is suspended from its original long chain (27 inches), enhancing its architectural presence. Intended as both an object of study and display, it exemplifies the enduring legacy of Islamic scientific metalwork and its revival in the early modern
