A highly expressive vintage African cast-bronze sculpture depicting a stylized mythical lion, attributed broadly to a West African folk-art metalworking tradition and dating conservatively to the mid-20th century, circa 1960. Compact in scale but filled with sculptural personality, this unusual animal figure combines exaggerated anatomy, vigorous surface decoration and the handcrafted irregularities associated with individually cast African metalwork. The lion is portrayed standing firmly on four short legs, its disproportionately large head turned slightly forward and its mouth dramatically opened to reveal a row of modeled teeth. Deeply incised lines surround the face and neck, suggesting a full mane rendered through rhythmic herringbone and linear patterns. Large ears, pierced eyes and a pronounced muzzle give the animal an almost mask-like expression. The long tail rises from the back of the body and curls upon itself, terminating in a broad, stylized tip. Rather than representing a naturalistic lion, the sculpture presents a symbolic or mythical beast. Across many African artistic traditions, powerful animals such as lions and leopards have been associated with authority, protection, courage and leadership. The artist has emphasized these qualities through the animal’s open mouth, commanding head and compact, forceful stance. Its expressive abstraction makes the sculpture especially appealing as both African Folk Art and a distinctive piece of modern decorative sculpture. The figure appears to have been individually cast in a copper-based alloy traditionally described as bronze. Its warm brown and golden surface displays oxidation, variations in color, casting irregularities, small openings and areas of accumulated patina. These characteristics are consistent with handcrafted metal casting and give the sculpture its tactile, one-of-a-kind appearance. Because the alloy has not been scientifically tested, it may contain a mixture of bronze and brass commonly used by traditional metalworkers. Although the raised tail and powerful feline imagery recall the decorative vocabulary of historic West African animal bronzes, the exact country, workshop and cultural group are undocumented. The sculpture should therefore be cataloged broadly as African or West African Folk Art rather than definitively attributed to the royal Edo artists of the Kingdom of Benin. This careful attribution allows the object’s craftsmanship and visual character to be appreciated without making an unsupported historical claim. Measuring approximately 3.5 inches high, 6 inches wide and 2.5 inches deep, the sculpture is ideally sized for display on a library shelf, writing desk, console, mantel, collector’s cabinet or small pedestal. Its bold silhouette works particularly well against pale plaster, limestone, parchment, dark walnut or contemporary neutral interiors.
