A wonderfully decorative vintage Moroccan multicolor glass orb lantern, handcrafted in Marrakech circa the 1970s, with jewel-toned molded glass medallions assembled within a dark patinated metal framework. The spherical lantern is constructed from individual round and oval molded-glass medallions, each impressed with intricate floral and geometric patterns. The richly colored glass includes saturated cobalt and sapphire blue, emerald and lime green, lavender, violet, amber, rose and pale opalescent tones, producing an unusually vibrant composition. Rather than conventional flat glass panels, the lantern incorporates molded glass discs of different sizes arranged organically around the spherical framework. Small triangular sections of colored glass fill the spaces between the larger medallions, creating an almost mosaic or stained-glass effect. Each molded glass element is individually held within the hand-worked metal framework. The metal retains an attractive dark brown, naturally oxidized and rust-toned patina, providing a dramatic contrast to the saturated colors of the glass. The individual medallions display repeating Moorish-inspired floral and geometric motifs pressed into their surfaces. Light passing through these textured elements accentuates both the color and relief of the glass, giving the lantern considerably more visual depth than a conventional flat-panel fixture.
