Large Vintage Moroccan Fez Polychrome Ceramic Urn Table Lamp, Moorish Design A commanding vintage Moroccan table lamp created from a large hand-painted lidded ceramic urn from Fez. With its sculptural proportions, twin handles and richly colored decoration, the lamp has the scale and presence of an architectural object while retaining the individuality and surface character of traditional Moroccan pottery. The substantial ceramic body has a broad baluster form, tapering toward the base and rising through gently sloping shoulders to a fitted domed cover. Two curved handles accentuate the urn’s amphora-like silhouette. The original lid has been carefully incorporated into the lamp conversion, allowing the historic form of the vessel to remain visually intact. Every surface is animated by hand-painted Moorish and Andalusian-inspired ornament. Stylized flowers, palmettes, scrolling foliage, arabesques and vase-like motifs are arranged in rhythmic panels around the body and repeated across the domed lid. The decoration recalls the Hispano-Moresque vocabulary associated with Fez, Granada and the Alhambra without suggesting that the lamp was produced in Spain. The palette is particularly attractive: powder blue and deeper cobalt are combined with turquoise and teal, saffron yellow, muted red, aubergine and warm ivory. Dark hand-drawn outlines define the individual motifs, while subtle differences in color, line and symmetry reveal the work of the artisan. The softly aged glaze displays natural craquelure, tonal variation and surface irregularities that give the lamp depth and an authentic vintage character. Fez has long been one of Morocco’s most important centers of ceramic production. Its pottery is recognized for richly glazed surfaces and hand-painted ornament shaped by Islamic, Andalusian and broader Mediterranean traditions. This urn reflects that heritage while its conversion into a lamp gives the piece a practical new function for a contemporary interior. At 28 inches high to the top of the socket and 15 inches in diameter, this is a genuinely large statement lamp rather than a small decorative accent. The ceramic urn itself measures approximately 25 inches high by 15 inches in diameter. Its generous scale makes it particularly effective on an entrance console, library table, substantial bedside chest or living-room cabinet. It would work beautifully in a Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean, Moorish, Moroccan, eclectic or layered contemporary interior. The lamp has been rewired and fitted with a new socket for use in the United States. A lampshade is not included, allowing the purchaser to select a shade suited to the intended interior. A simple ivory or natural linen shade would complement the hand-painted ceramic without competing with its ornament. Good vintage
