About

A striking vintage Moroccan cobalt blue glass lantern, handcrafted in Marrakech circa 1960s–1970s. With its spherical orb form, intense jewel-toned blue glass and graphic circular construction, this unusual Moroccan pendant has a distinctly Mid-Century Modern and Space Age character while remaining rooted in traditional Moorish metal-and-glass craftsmanship. The spherical shade is assembled from individual round and oval molded cobalt blue glass medallions, each framed and joined by hand in a dark, naturally oxidized metal framework. Many of the glass elements display subtle molded patterns and variations in texture, giving the surface additional depth and character. Because the glass pieces are individually made and assembled, slight irregularities are part of the handmade nature of the lantern. The saturated cobalt blue glass is particularly dramatic. In daylight, the lantern reads almost like a suspended glass sculpture, with different shades of blue appearing as light passes through the overlapping facets and textured medallions. When illuminated from within after appropriate wiring, the individual glass discs would create a rich jewel-like glow. Its round silhouette and constellation of circular glass panels also give the piece an unexpected 1970s disco-ball aesthetic. This combination makes the lantern particularly appealing for interiors that mix periods and cultures—equally at home in a Moroccan, Moorish, Mediterranean, Bohemian, Mid-Century Modern, Brutalist or contemporary eclectic interior. A discreet hinged access door incorporated into the shade allows access to the interior. The lantern measures approximately 11.5 inches high including the hook × 9 inches in diameter. Its relatively compact proportions make it particularly useful as a small pendant over a bedside table, powder room vanity, reading corner, bar, covered loggia or grouped installation. Several could also be suspended at varying heights to create a sculptural cluster. Please note that this example is being sold as a lantern shade only and is NOT currently wired for electricity. It could be professionally wired for use as an electric pendant if desired. The existing hanging hook is included. Handcrafted in Marrakech, Morocco, the lantern retains an attractive dark rust-colored patinated metal finish consistent with its vintage character. It is suitable for indoor use or a protected covered area only. Multiple examples are available, including related lanterns in different sizes. Variations between individual pieces are expected due to their handcrafted construction. A particularly decorative piece of Moroccan vintage lighting and collectible glass, combining traditional Marrakech craftsmanship with the bold color and sculptural geometry associated with 1960s and 1970s design.
