About

Vintage Netturpetti Brass-Mounted Teak Dowry Jewelry Box, Kerala, India, Circa 1950 A beautifully handcrafted Netturpetti (Nettoor Petti), a highly collectible traditional Kerala dowry chest originating from the Malabar Coast of South India. Dating to circa 1950, this exceptional teak wood box is richly mounted with hand-worked brass straps and hardware, exemplifying the refined craftsmanship for which these ceremonial chests are renowned. Characterized by its distinctive domed lid and architectural form, the Netturpetti was traditionally presented as part of a bride's dowry and used to safeguard jewelry, precious textiles, family heirlooms, and important documents. Beyond its practical function, it symbolized prosperity, status, and the beginning of married life, making it one of the most iconic forms of South Indian decorative arts. Handcrafted from solid teak wood, the chest is reinforced with intricately shaped brass bands, decorative rivets, and a substantial carrying handle. The warm patina of the aged teak contrasts beautifully with the richly oxidized brass, highlighting the authenticity and character developed over decades of use. Today, Netturpetti chests are highly sought after by collectors and interior designers for their sculptural presence and versatility. Perfect as a jewelry casket, keepsake box, document chest, or decorative object, this timeless piece complements Colonial, Anglo-Indian, Moorish, Global, Mediterranean, and eclectic interiors. Origin: Kerala (Malabar Coast), India Date: Circa 1950
