About

A striking vintage Moroccan tribal rug, handwoven in the Middle Atlas region of Morocco, circa 1960s. Measuring approximately 4 ft. 9 in. wide × 8 ft. 11 in. long (57 × 107 inches / 144.8 × 271.8 cm), this one-of-a-kind textile is distinguished by its unusually warm saffron-gold ground accented with terracotta, burnt orange, ivory, ochre and dark brown. The composition is especially appealing for its spontaneous, almost painterly quality. Rather than relying on a rigid repeating pattern, the weaver created an animated field of diamonds, eight-pointed star-like forms, small squares, floral abstractions and free-form geometric motifs arranged around a large central rectangular medallion. The subtle irregularity of the drawing and spacing gives the rug the unmistakable character of an individually handwoven textile rather than a mechanically symmetrical decorative carpet. Woven in wool using traditional Moroccan techniques, the rug has the tactile character and variation associated with vintage tribal weaving. Its softened palette, irregular outlines, variations in the weave and visible signs of age contribute to its authenticity and decorative appeal. These are precisely the qualities increasingly appreciated in antique and vintage Moroccan textiles: evidence of the maker's hand rather than manufactured perfection. The predominately saffron and amber coloration is particularly effective in contemporary interiors. Against limestone, travertine, plaster, oak or other restrained natural
