In Thai and Southeast Asian mythology, the Kinnari—also spelled Kinnaree—is a graceful celestial being portrayed as half-woman and half-bird. Celebrated for her beauty, dance, music and poetry, she is traditionally associated with feminine grace and artistic accomplishment. Hand-carved in Thailand during the mid-20th century, the panel reflects the elaborate decorative traditions associated with Thai temple and ceremonial architecture.
