About

A highly decorative mid-20th-century Moroccan Moorish hand-painted wood side table, distinguished by its sculptural eight-pointed star top, architectural pedestal base and exceptionally rich polychrome decoration. Handcrafted in Morocco circa 1950, the table brings together traditional Islamic geometric design, stylized floral ornament and the saturated colors associated with historic Moroccan interiors. The unusual eight-pointed star-shaped top immediately sets this table apart from more commonly encountered round or octagonal Moroccan occasional tables. Its recessed central panel is meticulously painted with an elaborate radial floral medallion surrounded by interlacing geometric borders and stylized foliate motifs. The palette combines deep Moroccan red with warm ochre, turquoise blue, jade green, black and cream, producing a richly layered surface without diminishing the clarity of the underlying geometry. The architectural pedestal is equally compelling. Its faceted sides are covered with repeating Moorish latticework and small stylized floral elements, while carved architectural openings around the lower portion recall the scalloped arches and decorative arcades found throughout traditional Moroccan architecture. Painted panels at the base provide another layer of ornament, making the table visually interesting from every direction. Measuring approximately 21 inches high × 22 inches in diameter, the table has substantial presence while remaining versatile enough to function as an occasional table, drinks table, end table or bedside table. Its proportions make it particularly effective beside a lounge chair or sofa, where the dramatic star-shaped top can remain fully visible. Although unmistakably Moroccan, this piece does not require a traditionally decorated interior. Its aged hand-painted surface can provide a particularly effective counterpoint to contemporary Mediterranean, Spanish Colonial, wabi-sabi, eclectic and modern interiors, where a single richly decorated antique or vintage object can introduce color, craftsmanship and historical depth. The table also reflects the sophisticated decorative tradition for which Marrakech became internationally celebrated during the 20th century. Designers and collectors increasingly incorporated Moroccan craftsmanship into European and American interiors, appreciating the tension between elaborate handwork and strong architectural geometry. This table embodies that sensibility particularly well: decorative and exuberant, yet disciplined by its symmetrical star form and faceted construction. Unlike mass-produced Moroccan-inspired furniture, this is a genuinely hand-crafted decorative object. Minor irregularities in the carving and painted ornament are inherent to its artisan construction and contribute to its individuality. The table retains an attractive vintage character with age-related
