A striking 19th-century Indo-Persian copper footed bowl from India, distinguished by its broad architectural form, warm red-copper surface and finely worked decoration. This substantial antique vessel combines a compressed hemispherical body with a slightly everted rim and a wide splayed conical foot, giving it an elegant, almost ceremonial presence. Entirely handcrafted in metal, the bowl displays traditional techniques of hammering, engraving, chasing and hand tooling. The exterior is ornamented with repeating engraved medallions and intricate foliate and arabesque-inspired motifs characteristic of the decorative vocabulary associated with Indo-Persian and Mughal Revival metalwork. The generous proportions are particularly appealing. Measuring approximately 13.5 inches at its widest point and 5.5 inches high, with a 13-inch top opening and 10-inch base, the bowl has enough scale to stand alone as a sculptural decorative object without overwhelming a tabletop. The copper has been professionally polished, revealing the beautiful warm reddish-gold tones of the metal while retaining evidence of age, handwork and historic surface character. Variations, oxidation, marks and irregularities remain visible and are consistent with an antique handcrafted metal object.
