A remarkable companion pair of monumental 19th-century Indian hand-carved wooden horses, each retaining layers of beautifully aged polychrome decoration and mounted on its original wheeled wooden platform. Dating to approximately 1880, these impressive sculptural horses combine folk-art character, ceremonial presence and the wonderfully imperfect surfaces that can only develop through generations of age and use. Each horse is individually carved rather than mechanically reproduced. Although closely related in scale and construction, the two are intentionally not identical. Their heads, facial expressions, harnesses, saddles, carving and surviving painted decoration differ, giving each horse a distinct personality while allowing them to work exceptionally well as a companion pair. The horses stand proudly on elongated wooden platforms fitted with substantial wheels. Their bodies are carved with pronounced saddles, bridles and harness
