n impressive pair of antique Indian hand-carved wood architectural fragments, now mounted on custom wood stands for display as freestanding sculptural objects. Tall and unusually narrow in proportion, each carving is worked in deep relief with an elaborate composition of scrolling foliage, floral forms and stylized figural ornament. The dense carving and strong vertical silhouette suggest that these pieces were originally incorporated into a larger architectural structure, possibly as decorative brackets, supports or truss elements. The pair retains a beautiful warm brown surface with pronounced natural wood grain and the softened character that develops through considerable age. Deeply undercut passages create areas of light and shadow throughout the carvings, making the pieces particularly effective when viewed from different angles. Rather than over-restoring the wood, the surviving surface has been allowed to retain its historic character. Variations in tone, age-related cracks, abrasions, losses and irregularities contribute to the sculptural quality and authenticity of these architectural fragments.
