About

A striking and unusually graphic vintage Moroccan Berber rug, handwoven in Morocco during the 1960s and distinguished by its dramatic palette of deep purple, plum, magenta, orange and black. Measuring an impressive 7 ft wide by 14 ft long (84 x 168 inches / 213.4 x 426.7 cm), this substantial Moroccan carpet has the presence of a textile artwork. The composition is built around a rhythmic field of interlocking geometric forms and elongated diamond and lozenge motifs, rendered through dense shifts of color that give the surface remarkable movement and depth. Rather than the neutral palette commonly associated with many Moroccan rugs, this example has a particularly rich and sophisticated coloration. Saturated berry and purple tones are punctuated by vivid orange against a dark ground, creating an almost pixelated visual rhythm. From a distance, the pattern reads as a bold abstract composition; viewed closely, the irregularities of the hand weaving reveal the individuality of the artisan's work. Handwoven from wool with traditional Moroccan weaving techniques, the rug reflects the textile traditions of Morocco's Berber communities while possessing a distinctly modernist sensibility. Its repeating geometric vocabulary relates beautifully to Mid-Century Modern, Brutalist and contemporary interiors, where the rug can function as both a floor covering and a major decorative statement. The unusually long 7 x 14 ft proportions make it particularly useful for a large living room, library, gallery-like space, bedroom, loft, expansive hallway or beneath a substantial dining table. It would also create a compelling counterpoint to restrained contemporary architecture, natural stone, plaster walls, walnut, leather or other neutral furnishings. The slight variations in weaving, coloration and geometry are intrinsic to its handmade character and distinguish it from machine-produced textiles. These subtle irregularities give the rug the visual personality collectors and designers seek in authentic vintage Moroccan weaving. Dating to approximately 1960, the rug survives in good vintage
