About

A striking and highly decorative vintage Moroccan Taznakht Berber rug, handwoven in southern Morocco circa 1960, distinguished by its unusually elaborate geometric composition and exceptionally rich palette. Measuring approximately 5 ft. x 8 ft. 5 in. (60 x 101 inches / 152.4 x 256.5 cm), the rug has an excellent versatile scale for a living room, library, study, bedroom, entry hall or layered designer interior. The composition is particularly compelling. Rather than relying on a simple repeating field, the weaver created an almost architectural arrangement organized around a dramatic central medallion. A large stepped diamond occupies the deep dark field at the center, surrounded by small abstract tribal motifs. Two rectangular panels flank the medallion, creating an unusual tripartite design that gives the rug remarkable visual structure. Multiple intricately woven borders surround the central composition, incorporating diamonds, stepped geometric forms and small linear motifs. The dense patterning is balanced by the strong symmetry of the overall design, giving the rug an appearance that feels simultaneously ancient and unexpectedly modern. Its palette is equally distinctive: saturated brick red, burnt orange, saffron, ochre, dark brown, ivory and deep indigo-black create a warm, sophisticated combination characteristic of collectible Moroccan tribal weaving. Handwoven in wool by Berber artisans associated with the Taznakht weaving tradition of southern Morocco, the rug demonstrates the extraordinary visual vocabulary developed by generations of Moroccan women weavers. Slight variations in the geometry, weave and borders are integral to its handmade character and distinguish the piece from machine-produced textiles. The abstract geometry makes this vintage Moroccan rug particularly relevant to contemporary interiors. Its strong graphic quality works beautifully with Mid-Century Modern, Mediterranean, Spanish Colonial, Brutalist, Organic Modern, Contemporary, Bohemian and eclectic interiors, while its age and craftsmanship give it the presence expected of a genuine vintage tribal textile. The approximately 5 x 8.5-foot format is also considerably easier to place than many oversized Moroccan carpets. It can anchor a seating area, sit beneath a cocktail table, define a library or study, or provide a strong artistic focal point in a neutral contemporary room. A highly decorative and collectible example of 20th-century Moroccan Berber textile art, combining strong color, complex geometry and the unmistakable individuality of handwoven tribal craftsmanship. Morocco, circa 1960. Good vintage
