About

A striking vintage Moroccan Rehamna tribal rug, handwoven in the plains surrounding Marrakech, dating to approximately the 1960s. With its saturated red field, graphic diamond vocabulary and deliberately irregular composition, this is a particularly expressive example of mid-20th-century Moroccan textile art. The rug measures an impressive 5 ft. 7 in. wide × 10 ft. 3 in. long, giving it excellent proportions for a living room, library, bedroom, entry hall or beneath a substantial dining table. Its design is organized into loosely defined vertical fields rather than a rigidly symmetrical pattern. Repeated diamonds, lozenges and smaller geometric motifs move across a richly variegated ground of brick red, terracotta and deep crimson, punctuated by ivory, charcoal and dark brown. The changes in scale and pattern from one section to another give the rug the spontaneous, almost abstract quality that makes early Moroccan tribal weaving so appealing to contemporary collectors. Rather than striving for mechanical perfection, the weaver allowed the composition to evolve across the surface. Diamonds expand, contract and change their internal decoration, while shifts in color and density reveal the individuality of the handmade process. The resulting asymmetry gives the rug tremendous visual movement and distinguishes it from later decorative reproductions. Hand-knotted from hand-spun wool, the rug retains the tactile irregularities, tonal variations and character associated with vintage Moroccan weaving. Its warm red palette has softened beautifully with age while remaining exceptionally decorative. Rehamna rugs originate from the region north and northwest of Marrakech and are particularly admired for their strong red grounds and bold geometric compositions. Their visual language can work remarkably well beyond a conventionally Moroccan interior. This example would provide warmth and graphic contrast in a wabi-sabi, Organic Modern, Mediterranean, Belgian Modernist, California Modern or contemporary minimalist interior, where its age and handwoven character can serve as an important counterpoint to restrained architecture and furniture. The substantial size also makes this an excellent statement rug for designers seeking an authentic vintage textile capable of anchoring a large room without relying on a formal repeating pattern. A highly decorative Moroccan tribal weaving with genuine age, strong color and an unusually dynamic composition—equally compelling as a functional floor covering or as a collectible example of North African textile art.
