About

A distinctive vintage Moroccan hand-painted ceramic calligraphy tile, handcrafted in Fez, Morocco, circa 1950. The square tile features expressive Arabic calligraphy painted in a deep brown tone against a warm ivory glazed ground, creating a bold graphic composition rooted in the centuries-old ceramic traditions of Morocco. The inscription is traditionally understood as “Al-‘Ilm Nur” — “Knowledge is Light” (العلم نور), a concise Arabic expression celebrating learning, wisdom and enlightenment. The free-flowing calligraphic forms nearly fill the entire surface, giving this small architectural object considerable visual presence. The contrast between the dark brown script and ivory ground creates an almost abstract composition when viewed from a distance, while closer inspection reveals the individuality and irregularities characteristic of hand-painted Moroccan ceramics. Handcrafted by an artisan in Fez, one of Morocco's historic centers of pottery, tilework and zellige production, the piece reflects the country's long tradition of combining calligraphy, architecture and decorative art. Although related to the Moroccan zellige tradition, this is best described as a hand-painted glazed ceramic tile rather than a traditional cut-zellige mosaic element. At only four inches square, it is particularly versatile as a collectible decorative object. Display it individually on a small easel or stand, incorporate it into a curated grouping of Islamic and North African art, or use it as an architectural accent. It would also make an interesting addition to a library or study because of the meaning of its inscription. The warm ivory glaze displays subtle surface character and age-related irregularities that complement the hand-painted brown calligraphy and reinforce the artisanal nature of the piece. Handcrafted and hand-painted in Fez, Morocco, circa 1950.
