56 various oval, rectangular, and square forms, each with classical figure or scene; now mounted in Chinese Chippendale style giltwood frame John Flaxman ( 6 July 1755 - 7 December 1826) - British sculptor and draughtsman, a leading figure in British and European Neoclassicism. Early in his career he worked as a modeller for Josiah Wedgwood’s pottery. He spent several years in Rome, where he produced his first book illustrations, leading Goethe to describe him as “the idol of all dilettanti”. Thomas Hope commissioned several pieces from Flaxman, making a marble group based on a story in Ovid’s Metamorphoses a centrepiece of a “Flaxman Room” at his London home.
