Danish modern “Papa Bear” chair designed by Hans J. Wegner for A.P. Stolen in Denmark, circa 1950s. Originally introduced as the AP-19, this iconic design is widely regarded as one of Wegner’s greatest achievements and a masterclass in balancing sculpture, craftsmanship, and comfort. The chair earned its famous nickname after a journalist remarked that its distinctive arms resembled a bear embracing the sitter. That playful observation perfectly captures the warmth and personality that make this design so enduring decades later. Every element was thoughtfully considered by Wegner. The dramatic wingback silhouette flows seamlessly into the sculptural armrests, while the hand-carved teak “paws” add an unmistakable signature detail that collectors immediately recognize. Deep button tufting across the backrest enhances the chair’s elegant contours while showcasing the precision of its upholstery work. The chair is supported by solid oak legs that provide both stability and a beautiful visual contrast against the dark leather. This example has been expertly restored by our craftsmen and reupholstered in luxurious Italian black leather, elevating the chair while remaining faithful to its original design language. The supple leather will continue to age gracefully, developing a rich patina that adds even more character over time. Hans J. Wegner believed furniture should be beautiful from every angle, and the Papa Bear chair is a perfect reflection of that philosophy. More than 70 years after its introduction, it remains one of the most recognizable and sought-after pieces of Danish modern design ever created.
