About

This rare Paul László “Basket Weave” dresser for Brown Saltman is a remarkable example of California modern design, combining architectural structure with a highly tactile oak surface. The front is composed of individually crafted oak blocks arranged into László’s signature basket-weave pattern, creating a mosaic-like rhythm of depth, shadow, and texture across the six drawers. During restoration, each block was carefully addressed and refinished one by one, requiring significant time and precision to preserve the original design while bringing the oak back to a rich, consistent finish. The sculpted angled base gives the dresser a light, floating presence, with a subtle Japanese-inspired quality that makes the heavy oak case feel elevated and refined. Designed in 1955 and expertly refinished while preserving its original character, this Model 1613 dresser is a truly special collector’s piece that reflects László’s rare ability to make furniture feel architectural, luxurious, and deeply handcrafted. Fun Historical Fact Paul László was a Hungarian-born architect and interior designer who brought a refined European design sensibility to California modernism. After establishing himself in Los Angeles, he became known for elegant interiors and furniture that balanced glamour, structure, and comfort. His work for Brown Saltman helped define a sophisticated West Coast modern look, less cold than strict modernism and more expressive in material, texture, and proportion. The “Basket Weave” line is especially admired because it turns the drawer front into a sculptural surface, almost like a wood mosaic built into the furniture itself. Pieces like this show why László’s work remains so collectible today: it feels modern, handcrafted, and quietly dramatic all at once. ____________________________________________ Discover more information about this beautiful piece by watching this video, click here
