Ettore Sottsass / Olivetti / Italy Italian Mid-Century, Ettore Sottsass designed, 1968, Olivetti "Valentine" portable typewriter. This groundbreaking piece by the Italian designer Sottsass for the equally illustrious Olivetti brand represented a deliberate break from conventional office machine aesthetics. Sottsass, working alongside Perry King, conceived the Valentine as a consumer object rather than a piece of office equipment and to that end utilized injection-molded ABS plastic in saturated red to replace the gray and beige housings standard to the industry. The design was intended to democratize typing and challenge the cultural associations of the typewriter as a strictly institutional tool. Its low-profile body and plastic shell houses a full mechanical typewriter mechanism that comes with, pleasingly contrasting, round black key caps. The original, matching, red clamshell carrying case is included and features a molded plastic body with ribbed edges and an integrated black handle — functioning as both transport case and display stand. The snap-fit case was manufactured as an integral part of the product system, not an accessory. Condition is consistent with age and use. Full cleaning is recommended and a new ribbon is needed prior to use.
